Chapter Six

Odella thought that her bed was moving round the room and she wondered what was happening.

She opened her eyes and for a moment she thought that she must still be dreaming.

She was lying down and yet she could see the Marquis just where her feet ended.

It was then she realised that she was in a travelling chariot that was proceeding at a very fast pace.

She made a little sound and the Marquis turned his head to look at her.

“Where – am I?” Odella asked.

“We are now driving to London,” he replied. “You have been snoring all the way and I thought you would never wake up!”

“I don’t snore!” Odella retorted indignantly and then realised that he was teasing her.

“You were like a quiet little mouse,” he conceded, “and there is no reason for you to wake up. Just relax and go to sleep again and I will take you to London safely.”

It seemed incredible to Odella that she had not realised that he must have carried her from the carriage that they had left Portsmouth in and into the travelling chariot.

She could remember that she had cried and that he had comforted her thoughtfully.

Now, unbelievably, they were on their way to London to try to save the life of the Prince Regent.

As if he knew that she was going over in her mind what had happened, the Marquis said,

“You are not to worry yourself. I have everything planned and, if nothing else, you will enjoy seeing Carlton House.”

“You mean – I will have to – go there?” Odella questioned.

“We are going to a party that His Royal Highness is giving,” the Marquis replied. “I had thought that I would be so busy in Portsmouth that I would have to miss it. Now I can take you and you will find it really spectacular.”

“But – how can I – ?” Odella began, thinking as any woman would that she had nothing to wear.

Then she remembered that Mrs. Barnet had put an evening gown in her trunk that she was supposedly taking to Mrs. Grayson’s house.

At the same time it was fascinating to think that she was to see Carlton House, which she had heard so much about and read of in the newspapers and magazines.

She lay back against the pillows that she knew the Marquis must have propped up behind her.

As she did so, she was aware that she was not wearing the black cloak that belonged to Madame Zosina. She was wearing a different one that was lined with fur and trimmed with ermine.

It certainly kept her warm, as did the fur rug that covered her legs.

Because she was small, there was just room, even though the Marquis was driving, for her to recline on the seat of the travelling chariot.

A groom was accommodated behind somewhat precariously and she knew this because she had seen one of these chariots when her uncle had travelled in one to visit her father.

If the groom was lucky, he also had a hood to pull over his head when it rained.
